The role of vertical transmission and health care-related factors in HIV infection of children

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the probable route of transmission of HIV to children aged 12 years or younger in a rural area of Uganda from 1999 through 2000 and to examine associations between HIV infection and health care-related variables. The findings suggest that a large number of injections were a consequence of AIDS-related illness rather then the cause of infection in vertically infected children.

Prevalence of elevated cholesterol and associated risk factors among perinatally HIV-infected children (4-19 years old) in Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group 219C

Article Abstract:

The Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group 219C (PACTG 219C) is a prospective cohort study designed to examine long-term outcomes in children born to HIV-infected women. Among the HIV-infected children, the overall prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was 13.0% and the strongest associated risk factor for hypercholesterolemia was current use of a protease inhibitor in the antiretroviral regimen.

Dyslipidemia among perinatally HIV-infected children enrolled in the PACTS- HOPE cohort, 1999- 2004: A longitutional analysis

Article Abstract:

The effects of protease inhibitor (PI) on lipid measures in a large cohort of perinatally HIV- infected children followed from birth is examined. Results reveal that children on PI- containing regimens have a higher risk of both hypercholesterolemia (HC) and hypertriglyceridemia (HT).
