The state of the unions

Article Abstract:

There appears to be a wide gap between nurse members and the organizations representing them, due to cultural and organization changes. The RCN has a range of clinical and specialist groups, and provides postgraduate education. Unison provides an open learning scheme and vocational training, and puts great emphasis on equal opportunities. The profession needs to examine the problems it faces and ensure that nurses are involved in addressing them.

Should ward leaders have direct control over domestic services?

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning whether nurses should manage ward cleaners and have greater control over the ward environment are presented. It is debated that this could be seen as a retrograde step linking nursing with domestic tasks. Reference is made to the effects of privatisation of hospital cleaning services in the 1980s.

Action replay?

Article Abstract:

Further NHS strikes, like those in 1988, are predicted as health authorities face money shortages. Nurses were then persuaded by some trade union officials not to take action, but this may not last because of their aversion to NHS reforms and their defence of clinical services.
