The management of placenta percreta: conservative and operative strategies

Article Abstract:

Management of placenta percreta should be dictated by the individual case. In placenta percreta, the placenta grows through the uterus and may invade the bladder or bowel. Catastrophic hemorrhage often occurs. Members of the Society of Perinatal Obstetricians reported on 109 cases. The uterus and involved tissues were removed in 101 cases, and in 8 cases the uterus was left with the placenta after delivery. Leaving the placenta may be considered when the woman is not bleeding heavily, and there is extensive invasion into adjacent tissues. Suggested guidelines are given for suspecting placenta percreta, diagnosis, and treatment.
