Thorn: a new approach to mental health training

Article Abstract:

The Thorn initiative began in the UK in 1992 as a means of introducing new approaches for the care of schizophrenics into community psychiatric nursing. Students from nursing and other professional and non-professional backgrounds attend a course for the equivalent of 40 full days over one year. They learn about the family intervention approach to care of schizophrenics in the community, and put the knowledge into practice in the course of their day-to-day work. Evaluations show that schizophrenics managed by students from the Thorn programme perform better clinically and socially.

Reviewing the review

Article Abstract:

Community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) should be given sufficient support, training and incentives by senior nurse managers, general managers and purchasers to meet the needs of patients with long-term mental health problems. The Department of Health issued a mental health nursing review in 1994, but this did not clarify those who would be deemed to have long-term problems. Service delivery will continue to be characterised by case management for some time into the future. The implications of the mental health review are examined.

Management of anxiety states

Article Abstract:

Anxiety state covers several categories including agoraphobia, social phobia and post traumatic stress disorder, and is extremely common, affecting millions of people in the UK. Mental health nurses can be very effective in treating such states using behavioural methods. However there is a shortage of nurse therapists and psychologists and several self help organisations have developed to offer practical advice.
