Train nurses to take time for back safety

Article Abstract:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration estimates that nurses account for the fifth largest source of workers-compensation claims. Most of such claims are lower back injuries associated with patient handling. Many safety experts believe that traditional training on body mechanics is not enough to reduce the incidence of patient handling injuries among nurses. They believe that intensive training on ergonomics and ergonomic equipment is needed to teach nurses about the hazards of improper patient handling.

UCLA study shows back supports can reduce injuries

Article Abstract:

Back supports, when incorporated with a safety training program and an ergonomically built workplace, can effectively alleviate back pain among workers. A study by the University of California (Los Angeles) School of Public Health reveals that back supports lessen work-related low back injuries by about one-third. FLA Orthopedics also reports that a back injury prevention program was able to reduce back injury per worker by more than 43%.

Furnish your office with clean air

Article Abstract:

The typical indoor workplace environment contains low levels of contaminants and chemicals. Although the effect of these contaminants on human health is not known, it can be assumed that they are capable of causing health problems. Employers can help make the workplace environment safer by selecting furniture and furnishings which have minimal contaminants. Several other tips on how to keep office air as clean as possible are presented.
