Transfer of metformin across the dually perfused human placental lobule

Article Abstract:

The ex vivo technique of dual perfusion of placental lobule (DPPL) is used to compare the transfer and distribution of metformin across term placentas obtained from uncomplicated pregnancies with those from women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Metformin is observed to be transferred rapidly and readily from the maternal to fetal circuit across placentas obtained from both uncomplicated pregnancies and from pregnancies with GDM.

Adipose tissue from pregnant women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus: Insulin-sensitive but resistant to hyperosomolarity

Article Abstract:

A study of adipose tissue from pregnant women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus is presented. There is no significant difference in insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue from pregnant or non pregnant women and hyperosomolarity stimulates glucose uptake in subcutaneous adipose tissue from nonpregnant women and adipose tissue from pregnant women is sorbitol resistant.

Congenital heart defects, maternal homocysteine, smoking and the 677 C>T polymorphism in the Methylenetetrahydroflate reductase gene: Evaluating gene-environment interactions

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate the association between congenital heart defects (CHD) and maternal homocysteine, smoking and the MTHFR 677 C>T polymorphism. It is suggested that the combined effect of elevations in maternal homocysteine, smoking and the MTHFR 677 C>T polymorphism increase the risk of having a CHD-affected pregnancy.
