Trial results reported in infants of group C meningococcal conjugate vaccine

Article Abstract:

The North American Vaccine reported that phase two clinical trials of the polysaccharide conjugate vaccine indicated for group C meningococcal infection were found to be safe and effective. The results were presented during a meeting of the European Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Moreover, the vaccine exhibited high levels of bactericidal action. The vaccine opens doors for the possible prevention of bacterial meningitis.

First vaccine receives approval from expert

Article Abstract:

A vaccine indicated for Lyme disease developed by Smithkline Beecham PLC was recommended for approval by the vaccines advisory committee of the Food and Drug Administration. The vaccine is targeting populations at risk of contracting the disease such as campers and outdoor lovers. Clinical trials in humans showed that 79% of subjects were protected from the disease, while populations below 60 years old were accorded 90% protection.

New vaccine developed for common childhood diarrhea

Article Abstract:

Johns Hopkins University scientist Mathuram Santosham reported the safety and efficacy of a rotavirus vaccine indicated for diarrhea in children developed by Albert Kapiaian from the National Institutes of Health. The vaccine was found to prevent 70%-80% of ordinary and severe cases of diarrhea. It is expected to improve the diarrheal condition which claims 873,000 deaths each year. The vaccine awaits the approval of the FDA.
