Triple-drug therapy may boost ovarian cancer survival

Article Abstract:

A post-surgical three-drug therapy administered in lieu of standard chemotherapy has returned early positive results, and may prove more beneficial than traditional treatments to victims of ovarian cancer. The treatment combines the drugs cyclophosphamide, paclitaxel and cisplatin in a dose-intensive fashion. Early results reveal that 70% of poor prognosis patients were free of disease after 22 months, as opposed to the 50% of optimal surgery patients who become free of disease after 18-19 months.

Short-term antihypertensive used despite FDA advice

Article Abstract:

An article in the Oct 23/30, 1996 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association emphasized the dangers of oral and sublingual administrations of short-term nifedipine for hypertensive emergencies and pseudoemergencies. The article claimed that physicians have continued to administer the capsules in these situations, despite information which shows that their use may be dangerous. In 1985, the FDA denied approval for labeling nifedipine for this use because of safety concerns.
