Tropical troubles

Article Abstract:

Tropical diseases and infections are appearing in the West because more people go abroad and global warming allows disease to spread. Parasitic worms, though unpleasant, are not life-threatening unless untreated. Typical diseases include Bilharzia, Loa Loa or hookworm. A dangerous form of malaria can be caught in sub-Saharan Africa from just one mosquito bite. Malaria tablets are an important preventative measure. Dengue fever is also caught from mosquitos. Tuberculosis is increasingly prevalent, as is viral hepatitis. Travellers must take appropriate steps to avoid getting ill.

Equal to the task

Article Abstract:

Communication between industrial designers and engineers is an important part of the design process but has sometimes been tainted by a lack or tolerance. However, such divisions are becoming less pronounced and industry is becoming more aware of the role and importance of an industrial designer. To aid the transition, an industrial design and engineering course co-run by Imperial College and the Royal College of Art has been updated.
