Tsunami aid spending draws fire over public health

Article Abstract:

The huge arrival of aid into regions hit by Asian tsunami are missing the opportunity to tackle the long-standing, urgent public health crisis such as tuberculosis, malaria and HIV. Thus the World Health Organization is strengthening its disease surveillance system and is supplying insecticide-impregnated bednets and fogging machines to spray insecticides in the air with an aim to prevent the outbreaks of diarrhea, cholera, measles, malaria and dengue.

Jemma Corr, a student public health specialist practitioner and Alexandra Murrell, a clinical nurse specialist in homelessness argue on the importance of annual health MOT of citizens. Jemma Corr supports the effort as it can help in explaining and promoting self-examination, identify risk factors, and employ preventive measures to improve health, while Alexandra Murrell argues that spending time and energy on MOTs for healthy people is a luxury.

Obesity is one of the major public health problems and the general population needs to have a balanced, healthy diet as it gives the energy and nutrients required to survive and stay healthy. A healthy diet and an active lifestyle have its own benefits and understanding its importance to health is very essential as it helps in reducing the risk of major health problems such as heart disease, cancer and obesity.
