Tuberculosis Mortality During a Civil War in Guinea-Bissau

Article Abstract:

Tuberculosis patients whose treatment is interrupted by war or other civil unrest are more likely to die than those who are properly treated. In Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, tuberculosis patients who were treated during a war were three times more likely to die than those treated under peacetime conditions. HIV patients with TB were eight times more likely to die during wartime.

Multidrug resistance among persons with tuberculosis in California, 1994-2003

Article Abstract:

The magnitude, trends, geographic distribution, clinical characteristics, risk factors and outcome of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases are described. MDR-TB, an airborne disease with limited, costly treatment options, persists in 1% to 2% of all cases despite California's control efforts.

Normandy helps Senegal

Article Abstract:

The Boucotte Primary Health Care project was created in 1988 to help Senegal families improve hygiene in their homes. It increased awareness of health issues and how to recognize and take care of them. One example of its success was in the reduction of malaria cases from 3,362 in 1990 to 772 in 1991.
