GSI sells unit to Packard Bioscience

Article Abstract:

GSI Lumonics Inc. (Kanata, Ont.) is selling its life sciences business to Packard BioScience Co. (Meriden, CT) for cash and stock worth about US$120-million. The deal will see about 75 of GSI's 1,400 employees shifted to Packard BioScience. GSI said the deal allows the company to focus on its core businesses of making laser systems and components for the semiconductor, electronics and automotive industries, and precision optics for telecommunications. The life sciences unit produces scanning systems for genetic analysis and mapping, drug research and other medical uses.

Twin feeding initiative

Article Abstract:

The HVA and the RCM is launching a training programme which will allow health visitors and midwives to work together to encourage more women to breast-feed. Breast-feeding rates in the UK have not increased since 1980, despite the success of the World Health Organization's (WHO) breast-feeding initiative in other countries, and some observers even claim that the government is hampering the expansion of breast-feeding by continuing to allow manufacturers of baby milk formulas to advertise in literature given to new mothers.
