US pressures publishers to honor trade embargoes
Article Abstract:
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) monitors and enforces the US trade embargo against certain countries where a branch of the US Treasury Department, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) stopped accepting papers submitted to its 11 journals from Sudan, Libya, Iran and Cuba. The embargoed countries are not permitted to render any services to the US.

Newborn screening grows up
Article Abstract:
The American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) issued guidelines recommending uniform screening among states to systematically develop criteria and prioritize disorders for newborn screening. The panel selected 29 conditions that included disorders affecting organic-acid, fatty-acid, and amino-acid metabolism, and hemoglobin-opathies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set a goal for a new vaccine for eradicating tuberculosis (TB) by 2015. Most of the vaccines being investigated are designed to keep the infection latent, but new approaches might prevent the bacteria from entering the lungs.
