Comparison of low- and high-altitude Doppler velocimetry in the peripheral and central circulations of normal fetuses

Article Abstract:

Measurements of fetal blood flow using Doppler ultrasound are not affected by altitude, according to researchers who compared these measurements in Milan, italy and Denver, Colorado, USA. Babies born in Denver had lower birth weights than those born in Milan.

Reduction of subcutaneous mass, but not lean mass, in normal fetuses in Denver, Colorado

Article Abstract:

The lower birth weight of babies born in Denver, Colorado, compared to those born at sea level is caused by a decrease in subcutaneous fat. The exact reason for this is not clear but a study of 46 babies born in Denver and 48 born in Milan, Italy, show that lean body mass is not affected by altitude.

Umbilical vein blood flow determination in the ovine fetus: comparison of Doppler ultrasonographic and steady-state diffusion techniques

Article Abstract:

Triplex-mode ultrasound scans are as accurate as the steady-state diffusion technique for measuring blood flow in the umbilical veins. Triplex-mode ultrasound uses color Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler and real-time ultrasound. Ultrasound is a non-invasive method, whereas the steady-state diffusion technique is not.
