Understanding cystic fibrosis, improving life expectancy

Article Abstract:

Cystic fibrosis (CF) sufferers are expected to live between 30 and 40 years due to advances made in gene therapy and a greater understanding of the relationship between the disease and the structure of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) protein. Research has concluded up to 75% of CF cases are caused by one of 10 different gene mutations, although there are over 800 different types known to man. Breaking down the build up of mucus in the respiratory, digestive or reproductive system can help increase life expectancy.

Nurses are better equipped to care for people with genetic disease if they have a greater knowledge of genetics. They should be able to differentiate between multifactorial disorders, which can have both environmental and genetic causes, such as cancer, diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease, and single-gene disorders, including cystic fibrosis.
