Using troglitazone to treat people with lipoatrophy syndromes

Article Abstract:

The diabetes drug troglitazone may increase fat cells in people with a condition called lipoatrophy syndrome, according to a study of 19 patients. This syndrome is characterized by reduced amounts of body fat. However, two patients developed liver damage from the drug, which was withdrawn from the US market after this study was done.

Triple-drug therapy may improve sugar control in adults with diabetes

Article Abstract:

Troglitazone used in combination with metformin and a sulfonylurea drug can control blood sugar in some diabetics, according to a Canadian study of 200 diabetics. However, this troglitazone increased the risk of hypoglycemia and was withdrawn in the US in 2000 because it caused liver failure in some patients.

Article Abstract:

Troglitazone appears to decrease insulin resistance by re-distributing fat tissue. Insulin resistance is considered to be a precursor of type 2 diabetes. Increased fat inside the peritoneal cavity has been shown to be a risk factor for insulin resistance.
