VA Medicare demonstration project faces uphill battle

Article Abstract:

G V Montgomery and other members of the House recommend a law to fund the Veterans Health Care Demonstration Project, which would direct Medicare to repay the Dept of Veterans Affairs for treatment of eligible persons in veterans hospitals. Opponents of the bill include the Bush administration, the American Hospital Assn and the Health Care Financing Administration. Critics say that veterans with service-connected disabilities and those with low incomes are already covered, and other veterans can afford medical care.

New NIH panel exploring 'alternative' medicine

Article Abstract:

The first meeting of National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Advisory Panel on Unconventional Medical Practices listened to speakers from several offbeat types of health care. NIH hopes that the panel will promote creative new research strategies beyond traditional practice. This approach has already enabled the National Cancer Institute to sponsor research on new antineoplastic agents. Dr. Jay Moskowitz called attention to the fact that many valuable therapies were ridiculed when first introduced.
