Vascular endothelial growth factor induced functional and morphologic signs of endothelial dysfunction in isolated arteries from normal pregnant women

Article Abstract:

A natural substance in the body called vascular endothelial growth factor may be partly responsible for causing a serious complication of pregnancy called preeclampsia. Researchers who exposed arteries from fat biopsy specimens to vascular endothelial growth factor found that it prevented the arteries from relaxing and also caused them to leak. Preeclampsia is believed to be caused by abnormal blood vessel function.

Change in estimated cerebral perfusion pressure after treatment with nimodipine or magnesium sulfate in patients with preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Magnesium sulfate appears to lower cerebral perfusion pressure whereas the calcium channel blocker nimodipine increases it. Cerebral perfusion pressure is blood pressure in the brain. Pregnant women with preeclampsia may have high pressure or low pressure and this will determine which treatment should be used. Doppler ultrasound can be used to measure the pressure.

Maternal plasma vascular endothelial growth factor concentrations in normal and hypertensive pregnancies and their relationship to peripheral vascular resistance

Article Abstract:

Blood levels of vascular endothelial growth factor increase in pregnant women with preeclampsia even before they develop symptoms. This may be the body's response to the constriction of blood vessels during preeclampsia, since vascular endothelial growth factor relaxes blood vessels. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy.
