Welcome complaints

Article Abstract:

Mental health authorities could encourage service users to complain and respond positively to their grievances in order to enhance their service provision. Mental health patients are at a disadvantage when complaining because their condition makes their accounts appear unreliable. Some patients could have genuine grievances but be unable to air their complaints because of the nature of their illness. Patients mostly complain about offenses against their person, but they rarely succeed in complaint cases. Assertiveness can be an effective tool when complaining.

A little local difficulty

Article Abstract:

The UK government has acknowledged that there is a lack of acute care facilities for the mentally ill, and is now to investigate whether funding of such facilities should be controlled by new mental health authorities. However, it has still to recognise that there is a crisis facing specialised mental health services as a whole. In some areas, whole categories of services are not available at all, but it is not practical for purchasers to invest in developing their own local specialised services.

New directions

Article Abstract:

Psychiatric nurses are adopting a holistic approach to treatment of the mentally-ill. Innovative practice rejects a purely bio-medical model of mental illness. The emphasis is on client-based care. The client is empowered to draw on a variety of services according to need. Alternative treatments include family therapy, participation in self-help groups and development of personal skills.
