Welcome to Britain?

Article Abstract:

Overseas nurses are finding it increasingly difficult to find work in Britain due to changes in the law. These have restricted their entry to the UK even though a shortage of British nurses has been acknowledged. In 1994 many of those already working in Britain were forced to return home and wait for work permits. Black nurses or those with unusual names find they have to undergo immigration checks, whilst others have experienced exploitation and racial discrimination. Prospective student nurses from abroad find it hard to get onto nursing courses especially if they are unable to pay.

A comparison of a 12-hour and eight-hour shift system

Article Abstract:

The 12-hour shift system was preferred to an 8-hour shift system by 94% of staff questioned in a British hospital. A study was made of 50 nurses on four medical wards, 33 of whom were on a 12-hour shift rotation while 17 were on an 8-hour shift rotation. A variety of study methods were used including an interview and questionnaire for the nurses as well as 20 patient interviews. Those on a 12-hour shift responded more favourably, reporting less tiredness and more job satisfaction, although changeover time was a problem due to the volume of information to be relayed.
