Learning to lead: short courses give the basics - and the not-so-basics - of medical business management

Article Abstract:

Medical practitioners must acquire business as well as clinical skills to succeed in a healthcare field driven by managed care and integrated healthcare networks. Various programs are available that provide business training without requiring significant time commitments from physicians. These include one sponsored by the Voluntary Hospitals of America (VHA), which is available in cities where there are VHA hospitals, and one designed by the American Medical Assn and offered through Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Less regulation won't mean easy time for networks

Article Abstract:

Proposed legislation would promote provider-sponsored healthcare networks by making it easier for doctors to directly sell services to Medicare patients, but nonregulatory barriers would still make it difficult for such networks to succeed. Networks would have to master clinical-services management and would have to be able to develop and market themselves.
