Where the chips fall: environmental health in the semiconductor industry

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern the human and environmental health effects of the manufacture of semiconductors, which involve hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals. Topics addressed include worker exposure to unsafe chemicals, liability for hazardous working conditions and environmental damages, and efforts to improve the environmental policies of computer chip manufacturers.

The author discusses the possible environmental impact of the Y2K bug. Many of the systems which control pollution and regulate environmental hazards use computer software and microchips susceptible to the Y2K-related malfunction.
