Where there's a will there's a way

Article Abstract:

Charitable organisation, The Hamlet Trust, is working to improve conditions in mental health institutions in Eastern Europe where mental patients have to endure dreadful conditions and receive minimal care. They can be kept locked up indefinitely. The Hamlet Trust has set up non-governmental organisations which now run 31 projects spread over 16 countries and they offer housing, employment and leisure activities for the mentally ill. There is little money to spend but those involved have a lot of dedication and ideas.

There but for the grace of God

Article Abstract:

An inquiry into the community care of a violent psychiatric patient who went on to commit murder yielded a report which is of importance to psychiatric personnel. The report indicates that Luke Warm Luke's murder of his girlfriend occurred because his care was not adequately planned or operated, because psychiatrists were arrogant, and because the community psychiatric nurse and probation officer failed to challenge medical instructions.

No refuge in asylums

Article Abstract:

Community care of the mentally-ill is more appropriate than treatment in mental hospitals. Many have successfully re-entered society following hospital closures. Treatment should not revert to institutional care and compulsory treatment orders on safety grounds. Adequately resourced community care would improve quality of life for the mentally-ill. Help with housing and benefit claims is necessary.
