Wild-mushroom intoxication as a cause of rhabdomyolysis

Article Abstract:

The edible wild mushroom Tricholoma equestre appears to contain a substance that can cause rhabdomyolysis in humans who eat large quantities of the mushroom. Twelve people have been effected in France since 1992, three of whom died. Rhabdomyolysis occurs when muscle is damaged and releases muscle proteins into the blood stream. The proteins can lodge in the kidneys and cause kidney failure.

Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation for respiratory failure after exbutation

Article Abstract:

The effect of noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation on mortality is evaluated by conducting a multicenter, randomized trial. The findings reveal that noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation does not prevent the need for reintubation or reduce mortality in unselected patients who have respiratory failure after extubation.

Noninvasive ventilation in immunosuppressed patients with pulmonary infiltrates, fever, and acute respiratory failure

Article Abstract:

Ventilation delivered through a face mask alternated with spontaneous breathing with supplemental oxygen can be used in patients with respiratory failure instead of placing them on a ventilator. This was the conclusion of a study of 52 immunosuppressed patients in respiratory failure.
