Wireless communications: a new frontier in technology

Article Abstract:

Health care institutions are considering how to utilize wireless technology, which uses radio-based systems to transmit signals without physical connections. Medical personnel could use handheld computers at bedsides to document assessment changes or order interventions. Success with a wireless system requires choosing a system that will provide coverage throughout the entire facility, access to all health care applications, and complete technical support and service.

Including nursing in medical outcomes research

Article Abstract:

Nursing is underrepresented in medical outcomes research. The attempt to use statistical methods to define "best practices" is important work, and is being carried out by federal agencies, independent companies, large health care providers and pharmaceutical companies. Nursing data is routinely excluded from such research because it lacks a universal taxonomy, but this issue needs to be addressed.

Common technology terms

Article Abstract:

Nurse administrators need to educate themselves to stay current with the increasing vocabulary of medical technology. Many terms are computer related, such as UNIX, OS/2, Windows, local area network, and wide area network. Other terms involve the Internet and the World Wide Web. These and other terms are becoming increasingly important for nurse administrators.
