Withdrawing gracefully

Article Abstract:

Home detoxification programmes may be appropriate for some alcohol abusers. Family support is available and negative hospital associations are avoided. Appropriately qualified and experienced nurses should conduct the programme. Initial assessment will determine the most appropriate interventions. Detoxification usually lasts nine days. Medication may be necessary to cope with withdrawal. Regular monitoring of the client's condition is essential.

Habit-forming questions: drug users are often reluctant to discuss details of their habits with health-care workers

Article Abstract:

Many nurses may feel they can identify an individual with a substance-related problem, however many young people experimenting with illegal substances do not conform to a stereotype. Drugs can remain in the body for several days or weeks which can be a problem for intervention by medical and nursing staff if the user has an accident or is pregnant. Nurses should avoid apportioning blame if they are to carry out effective intervention.
