Without a shadow of doubt

Article Abstract:

It is vital that the National Health Service places emphasis on the views of users, rather than those of providers, according to Tessa Jowell, the UK Labour party's spokeswoman for health. The National Health Service is undoubtedly the best channel for providing health care in the UK, but she is realistic about the problems it faces. There are a number of key issues which she would like to address if the Labour party comes to power, including the treatment of mothers with young children, the declining rate of breast-feeding and reducing the number of smoking-related deaths.

Difficult choices

Article Abstract:

Nurses should contribute to discussions on withdrawing treatment from patients in persistent vegetative state (PVS). Nurses may be profoundly affected by such a decision. Emphasis on medical evidence may overshadow nursing observations. The British Medical Association considers the full care team should reassess a PVS patient after one year. The family and two independent neurologists should then be involved.
