Women's movement?

Article Abstract:

The NHS management executive's new guide, 'Women in the NHS,' sets out eight goals aimed at providing equal opportunities for women in the NHS. These include increasing the proportion of women consultants from 15% to 20% by 1994 and the percentage of women general managers from 18% to 30% by the same date. The guide also provides for nurses returning after a maternity or career break to be employed at the same grade as when they left, and for greater female representation on authorities or trusts. While the RCN has given the initiative a cautious welcome, COHSE sees the guide as nothing more than a PR exercise.

Troubleshooters

Article Abstract:

Despite the ceasefire between the IRA and loyalists in Northern Ireland, the accident and emergency department at Belfast's Mater Infirmorum Hospital continues to be busy, but the nature of the casualties has changed. Formerly, it would have treated wounds caused by bombing incidents and gunshots, but there has been a dramatic rise in accidents caused by drunkeness, rowdy behaviour and drug-taking. The increase in the number of admissions is believed to be the result of the more relaxed atmosphere in Belfast, with the ceasefire encouraging more people to go out and enjoy themselves.

No place to go

Article Abstract:

The Children's Society psychiatric admissions study found that very young children, without emotional difficulties, are being admitted to adult mental hospitals. Their symptoms were mainly clinical or physical and only a few had behavioural difficulties. Nurses have been called on to help stop the practice.
