Workers know best: one city employee's invention can ease backbreaking work

Article Abstract:

The E-Z Lid Lift is an invention that shows how employees can find ways to make their jobs easier and safer. The invention effectively answers the call for a safer way to lift sewer lids weighing between 80 pounds and 200 pounds and demonstrates how jobs can be made safer by gathering input from employees. Employees should have an active role in occupational safety and the invention of the E-Z Lid Lift proves that their role could be very effective.

Are tough safety laws enough?

Article Abstract:

Brazil has one of the most progressive occupational health and safety programs in Latin America. The Ministry of Labor, for instance, conducts inspections and offers training assistance to the private and public sector. Medical care and compensation is also given to injured employees by the Ministries of Health and Social Security. However, the enforcement of safety laws is being hampered by a shortage of inspectors.
