Your case or mine?

Article Abstract:

Arguments over whether people with a learning disability who are also suffering from mental illness are the responsibility of mental health or learning disability services will do little to improve services for such clients. The idea that one particular service should take full responsibility is inappropriate since people with both learning disabilities and mental health problems are a heterogeneous group. The temptation to apply simplistic solutions must be resisted and it can be argued that such people should benefit from the services of as many professionals as their needs require.

Facing up to the challenge

Article Abstract:

Well-trained learning disability nurses are fundamental to good quality service for clients with behavioural problems. Special units are unnecessary. Training in goal-setting and behaviourism will enhance nurse skills. Therapeutic emphasis has moved from correction to encouragement and increased nurse-client interaction will reduce challenging behaviour. Managers should direct practice, monitor performance and provide appropriate training.

Hitting back at the bullies

Article Abstract:

Workplace bullying is more common in the UK than is generally believed, and trade unions are starting to take action to protect members who have fallen victim to bullying. Few of the country's leading companies have a specific policy on bullying, even though its effects are felt in many different ways. Bullying can cause mental anguish and physical problems, and can thus be very expensive to companies in absenteeism.
