Business information and regional economic development: some conceptual observations

Article Abstract:

The possession of good, relevant technical and financial business information is a major element in industrial growth, but there is a tendency for British managers to seek information to solve an immediate problem rather than to anticipate future difficulties. As well as having insufficient time to read information, businessmen are frequently unable to pinpoint their needs and are not aware of the various sources of information material, such as libraries. The sharing of information between industrialists, leading to the adoption of 'best practices,' is important in the success of agglomeration economies.

The indirect economic effects of Ecopetrol's contracting strategy for informatics development

Article Abstract:

A research effort identifies and quantifies the indirect impact of public-owned Ecopetrol's informatics contracting strategy on Colombia's economy. An approach developed by the European Space Agency was extended to measure the spin-offs resulting from its strategy for contracting technological development. Results show that each dollar contracted by the petroleum company's Informatics Division generates an average value-added incrase of U$3.6 to Colombia's economy via cost reductions, new sales and new contracts.

Equipment leasing: a strategy for technology acquisition in Nigeria

Article Abstract:

Equipment leasing is used as an effective method of acquiring technologies in Nigeria. Equipment leasing also gives lessee a number of benefits, such as being able to acquire a technology at a cheaper price. The method also does not allow the public disclosure of financial information. Moreover, short-term operating lease is recommended when the time period to reach the break-even point is greater than the economic useful life of the equipment or when the volume is up and down.
