Developments in new biotechnology firms in Germany

Article Abstract:

The number of biotechnology firms in Germany has been rising since the mid-1980s. Most of these firms are located near academic centers, indicating close links between the biotechnology industry and the German research system. The profile of these firms differentiates them from their US counterparts, since most are involved in environmental biotechnology and instrumentation, two fields where German institutions have long excelled in. Products of the German approach to innovation, these firms are expected to remain competitive with firms that follow the Anglo-Saxon technology model.
