New venture scholarship versus practice: when entrepreneurship academics try the real thing as applied research
Article Abstract:
The role of entrepreneural study in establishing sound management decisions can be gleamed in a study made over two ventures: publishing and chemical. Three aspects of decision points were employed: time aspect of the venture cycle, functional aspect such as marketing, operations etc., and the learning aspect or entrepreneural knowledge applied to determine crucial incidences when academic learning greatly influences proprietor's decision. Both ventures showed higher mark of incidents positively hastened by academic learning especially in the chemical venture.

The entrepreneur's education and experience affects the success of a newly established business. An entrepreneur's academic degree and business experience enhances the profitability of a business. Technical experience improves business growth and production profitability. An entrepreneur with a degree in social sciences usually excels in management. The success of product marketing and development is enhanced by the entrepeneur's knowledge and familiarity of the product.

Patenting strategies in the German mechanical engineering industry and their relationship to company performance
Article Abstract:
A survey of 50 German mechanical engineering firms was carried out to investigate the link between their patenting strategies and organizational performance. Several patenting indicators were realized: relative European patent activity, rates of granted patents and rates of valid patents. Based on these, the firms were classified into selective patentees, unsuccessful patentees, international highly active patentees and small highly active patentees.
