Many amateur collectors have difficulty determining true error stamps from freaks and relatively less valuable varieties. The distinguishing characteristics of stamp errors, such as colors omitted and perforation errors, are compared with the features of stamps deemed freaks and oddities.

Few stamps with errors escape the screening by post office workers. However there are many stamp enthusiasts who specialize in collecting such stamps. Tips are offered to help a searcher know what to look for in flawed stamps. They include errors in the perforation of the stamps.

Sound reasoning behind policy

Article Abstract:

The Scott postage stamp catalog's policy of listing imperforate errors with sheets of stamps rather than single stamps is fair. The perforations on single stamps could be altered to look flawed. Erroneous perforations should be inside the stamp design.
