First Artcraft cachet is a scarce item

Leo August's name is established and recognized in the stamp collecting area of first day covers. He began his career as a stamp dealer in 1939 at his Washington Stamps Exchange, now the Washington Press, along with his brother Sam. Their services and products, under the name Artcraft, are discussed.

Dummies, booklets and other post office items

Article Abstract:

Experiments at automated post offices are conducted by the US Postal Service using dummy stamps, coils and booklets of stamps. Sometimes these items get into collections but few are valuable. Not so valuable either are stamps with slight flaws which sellers try to vend for ridiculous prices.

The Civil War's attempt at aerial warfare

Article Abstract:

An observation balloon was used briefly during the Civil War, and Ivy Baldwin convinced the American Army to use another observation balloon during the Spanish-American War. The post office did not issue a stamp commemorating Baldwin, who was the first aviator to be shot down in battle.
