The collection of St Louis Bear stamps were amassed by the late Margie Fairman. Her life and interest in philately are discussed. The bear stamps were put on sale in 1845. The history of their engraving and composition is recounted, as well as the history of the stamps and their usage.

The sheetlet of eight stamps depicts famous American personalities. The men depicted are Clark Gable, Joe Louis, Audie Murphy, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Doolittle, John Hersey, John F. Kennedy, and Jimmy Stewart. A brief profile is given of each honoree.
