Mystery ship: how did the QE2, which draws 32 feet, run aground in 39 feet of water?

The Queen Elizabeth 2 ran aground in Vineyard Sound off Massachusetts, causing $20 million in damages to the ship. An investigation found the accident was probably caused by the 'shallow water effect.'

Running aground

Article Abstract:

The ocean liner Queen Elizabeth II ran aground off Cuttyhunk when it hit a ledge that was not on the charts. The incident underlines the importance of using a depthsounder to avoid problems.

The cause of the grounding, and there is no doubt about it, is that she hit a 30.5 foot shoal that was shown as a 39 foot depth on the charts. Surveys in 1939 that established this depth, were not further investigated, as they should have been, in order to determine the minimum depth on this shoaling area.

This lack of professional attention to existing standing orders on the subject of examining all indications of shoaling was not understood at the New York trial Judge in 1996 and the US Government agency responsible for gathering this information was exonerated. Too bad.
