Article Abstract:

Square dancing is based on dances brought to the US by European immigrants, and has a long tradition in the US. It is still immensely popular in some parts of the country, as is contradancing, an old form of line dancing. This popularity is attributed to the fact that it offers a different kind of social interaction than anything else, and gives people a context for respectable human touch. One night at West Virginia jamboree is described.
