Hyperbilirubinemia: new approaches to an old problem

Article Abstract:

Hyperbilirubinemia, jaundice, is a common problem in babies born at or near term. More than 60% of the babies born in the US develop jaundice and it is difficult to tell the difference between that which comes from pathologic sources and that which is physiologic. Knowing that bilirubin may be beneficial as an antioxidant has brought new interest jaundice management. There are new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics for management. A number of theories exist on bilirubin production and clearance and on techniques to assess jaundice and care for it as well as to prevent it.

On the Use of Semantic Constraints in Guiding Syntactic Analysis

Article Abstract:

Natural language comprehension involves the use of semantic constraints to reduce the ambiguity inherent in so many sentences. It is shown that the sensibleness of information about a sentence is used to resolve the ambiguity of the sentence. The computation of sensibleness occurs at the same time as the analysis of syntactic structure and uses semantic constraints in conjunction with syntactic analysis. A formulation is presented which uses continuous semantic constraints. The constraints may be derived from a fuzzy propositional semantic memory.
