Depot's big problem: success

Article Abstract:

Former Home Depot Exec VP James Inglis's speech at the November '96 Home Center Presidents' Council accused Home Depot of having a corporate culture obsessed with efficiency. As a result, its new ventures into drive-through lumber yards, CrossRoads, and interior decoration, Expo, are not as profitable as its core home center stores. Inglis described the Sears acquisition of Orchard Supply Hardware as 'brilliant,' and applauded Sears for having a more flexible corporate culture that has kept it from being damaged by Home Depot's explosive growth.

At H&S Ace Hardware, ceo Stanley Sokowsky promises to hold on to the business he's developed.

Article Abstract:

A new Home Depot unit has opened in Columbia, Ohio, in a facility that was once the former CrossRoads store, a rural retail concept created by Home Depot.
