Thomas Messel, nephew of noted designer Oliver Messel,designs Gothick and Italianate furniture which disguise modern-day amenities. At his workroom in Gloucestershire, England, Messer creates antique-like books which are actually, among others an ice bucket, and a Regency bookcase filing cabinet.

Four families near Washington, Maine have homes powered with photovoltaic batteries or solar cells. The benefits and drawbacks are discussed. In a Maine winter about 2 cords of wood may be needed and a propane backup generator is also on hand. But most of the time, the sun powers the homes.
