Helping weave the dream: the California Basket Weavers Association brings together makers and supporters of a native craft

Article Abstract:

Native American basketry is gaining widespread popularity and patronage thanks to the efforts of the California Indian Basketweavers Assn. The nonprofit organization regularly gathers traditional weavers at any of its activities, enabling them to learn techniques and design ideas from each other.

American Craft Council gold medalists

Article Abstract:

The American Craft Council has awarded the Gold Medal to 14 artists since 1970, four of whom will receive it on Oct 8, 1993. They are Alma Eikerman, Douglass Morse Howell, Marianne Strengell and Robert Turner. Brief biographies of the winning artists and examples of their work are presented.

The modern era: craft in transition

Article Abstract:

The American Craft Museum hosted a 'Craft in the Machine Age - European and American Modernism: 1920-1945' symposium on Mar 20, 1992. Seven speakers presented papers of varying quality, but no speaker was able to define clearly the core notions of craft and modernism.
