If a tree falls, etc

Article Abstract:

Wood quality and price will be seriously affected by political and court decisions concerning the cutting of trees, especially old-growth timber on public land and their are important arguments to both sides of the timber cutting question. Wood and wood products are needed for approximately half of the domestic homes, home improvements and furniture and shortages of wood affect both quality and price. However, increased cutting would affect air quality, endanger wildlife and destroy public forests which are equally important to most Americans.

Dear Bill: can you say fiscal prudence?

Article Abstract:

The most expensive second Inauguration in history, Jan '97, cost $33 million. Nearly $12 million was taxpayer-subsidized, through the Defense Dept., the National Parks, the General Services Administration, and the District of Columbia. Nine million was surplus funds from 1993, and all of the money could have been used for much better purposes. There is no constitutional requirement for any parade or gala banquets, and such extravagance is ironic given Bill Clinton's vows to balance the budget.

Face to face with the lumber issue

Article Abstract:

Homeowners, even those with strong pro-environmental beliefs, can be faced with a multi-sided dilemma when ancient trees on their property begin creating hazardous conditions. The decision as to whether or not to cut and sell the trees must consider the needs of the homeowner, the environmental aspects, the purposes of the purchaser and the laws of the area.
