Lumber prices ease after steep increases

Article Abstract:

The National Assn of Home Builders (NAHB) and National Lumber and Building Materials Dealers Assn, in a Nov 19, 1996, press conference, explained their opposition to the Apr 2, 1996, US/Canada lumber agreement. The trade groups hold the deal responsible for dramatic price increases. According to NAHB president Randall Smith, the agreement, in combination with reduced US timber harvests, has resulted in a serious supply/demand imbalance. Lumber prices have fallen since the press conference, however.

Turning to lumber alternatives

Article Abstract:

Availability and prices prompted Seattle-based remodeler Dale Hoff to find non-wood building materials to replace the conventional lumber he used. Hoff notes that rising prices, especially of cedar, prompted him to look at engineered wood and steel studs. He notes that while some of the engineered products are close in price to some lumber products, quality makes them good buys. Unlike natural woods, he says that engineered wood has no quirks.
