Magnolias: choose from large trees or small shrubs, flamboyant flowers or bashful blossoms

Article Abstract:

Magnolias are a popular and often spectacular tree with many species and cultivars capable of growing in USDA zones 4 through 9. More than 30 species are cultivated worldwide, most of them with early-blooming flowers that appear before leaves emerge. Magnolias come in many shapes and sizes with a great variety of flower types, making them appropriate in nearly any garden. Among the most popular are the hybrid saucer magnolia, Magnolia kobus var loebneri, M grandiflora, M virginia, and Todd Gresham's hybrids.

Tough shrubs

Article Abstract:

Western US climates demand plants with special characteristics and tolerances not easily classified by USDA zone. Plants here can expect to face dry, alkaline soil; sudden, sharp temperature changes; low humidity; and intense sun. Suitable plants include mountain mahoganies (genus Cercocarpus), th Apache plume, the Smith buckthorn, the buffalo currant, and the skunkbush. Popular prejudice long held that water-intensive plants were more desirable, but that belief is rapidly changing.
