Sears to buy Orchard Supply Hardware

Article Abstract:

The announcement by Sears, Roebuck and Co that it plans to acquire Orchard Supply Hardware of San Jose, CA took many in the hardware and home building supplies industries by surprise. Although Sears had announced that it planned to expand the number of its stores from 115 in 1996 to 500 by 2000, many expected Sears acquisition targets to be Hechinger or Builders Square. Sears is expected to pay $35 each for Orchard's 8.8 million shares stock.
