Faces of common folks

Article Abstract:

Folk art portraits are informed not by academy training but by decorative art and design, inexpensive materials, and more good intentions than anatomic realism and were the most broadly known and experienced kind of art in America before the 1850s. Folk art provides a rich context for understanding the craftsman traditions of the period, modes of clothing, household furnishings and decoration and like any other art folk painting is successful because it stands the test of time and is a remarkable work of art.
