A local authority approach to harassment

Article Abstract:

The Newcastle City Council has taken steps to ensure the safety of its employees from potential damage from external sources. Special protection systems for its public sector employees, who normally interact with aged and disturbed clients of social services, were devised to control the risks of violence being inflicted. Development of a method for effectively shielding its employees from injuries started with the identification and evaluation of possible harassments. This involves going through documents and conducting employee surveys. The devised policy that includes the role of workers in its effective implementation was then communicated to employees. Preventive measures include redesigning the workplace, special working processes, staff teaching and guidance and a method of encoding, reporting and following up cases. Employees victimized by violence are supported by management and repetition of harm is avoided.

A healthy approach to performance appraisal

Article Abstract:

Nuffield Hospitals in the UK have adopted an approach to performance appraisals that has been successful in focusing managers and employees on personal development. The performance appraisal scheme had three elements: objective setting, performance assessment, and personal development. Objective setting and performance assessment were already well-developed, so the program focused on fostering personal development so employees would be clear about their job scope and job content, their career progress, and so that two-way communications could be fostered and succession planning could be assisted. The program was successful because it was made available to all staff; the process is driven by the employees and not the managers; employees evaluate their own performance; and the role of the manager becomes that of a mentor.

As new jobs decline, workers must transfer skills

Article Abstract:

The US employment statistics reveal that creation of new jobs has slowed considerably, with the number in May 2006 declining 10.5% from 2005. This employment environment forces people to change industries and successfully transfer their skills from one industry to another, leading to workers displaced by manufacturing and banking industries looking for jobs in unrelated industries like healthcare, information technology and professional services.
