A training solution for lean and mean times

Article Abstract:

Companies are under increasing pressure to improve productivity through upgrades in worker skills. However, such a task remains daunting due to decreasing training budgets. One way to circumvent such a dilemma is to use in-house subject matter experts (SME) as occasional trainers. SMEs posses the knowledge, skills and experience that can be converted into training material. Among the benefits offered by such a training resource are avoidance of culture clashes, reduction of training expenses, shortened course-development time, company-focused training, relevant instruction, expanded training resources and swift updates. However, SMEs will have to learn how to prepare and deliver student-centered training. They will have to study learning objectives, how adults learn, needs analysis, training materials, teachers' guides and measurement tools.

HRIS logs on to strategic training

Article Abstract:

Human resource departments with human resource information systems (HRIS) professionals have an opportunity to play an expanded role in providing employee training and development, especially for positions using computers. HRIS professionals can use their knowledge to increase their value to their company, ensure their job security, and enhance the chances of their company surviving in an increasingly competitive global environment. The ways that HRIS professionals can build on their existing capabilities include using HRIS data bases that contain information about people, jobs, and company goals to link strategic planning with training programs; designing relevant training programs to fill the needs of different employees; and combining HRIS skills and training technology for computer skills training.
