Allergan's structuring for success

Article Abstract:

Allergan Inc has become one of the leading eye care companies in the world by restructuring its human resources (HR) department. An HR position at the vice presidential level was established, and both centralized and decentralized structures were incorporated into the HR function. The decentralized structure allowed Allergan to focus on market segments and identify objectives to achieve flexibility and ease of communication. The centralized structure allowed the firm to take advantage of technology transfer and information regarding R&D, marketing, manufacturing, and management. The HR department was able to reduce field sales turnover from 29% in 1990 to 13% in 1991.

Acts of hatred

Article Abstract:

Hate crimes rates in the US are increasing. In Los Angeles, CA, alone, a total of 672 cases were noted for 1991 as compared with 550 in the previous year, equivalent to a 22% increase in hate crimes from 1990 to 1991. These acts of hatred stemmed from racial, religious, sexual orientation, and gender-based causes. The rise in hate crimes provides serious implications for human resources professionals who must face up to the possibility of having to deal with such crimes in their particular workplaces. Specific incidences of hate crime in several states are provided.

Texaco's penalty for sex discrimination

Article Abstract:

Janella Sue Martin, Texaco Refining & Marketing Inc's credit supervisor, filed a lawsuit against the company for denying her promotion because of her sex. The court found Texaco guilty of intentional or reckless wrongdoing and awarded Martin $20.3 million in damages, the largest amount yet to be given to a person in a sex discrimination case. The case is expected to make many companies review their policies for discriminatory provisions.
